About Mivan Tie Rod

What is a Tie Rod and Why is it Used?

In civil engineering and high-rise construction, a Formwork Tie Rod (also known as a concrete thread bar or high-tensile tie rod) is a rugged steel bar featuring a continuous, coarse hot-rolled or cold-rolled thread pattern.

Why it is used:

  • Absorbs Outward Pressure: It acts as a heavy-duty structural anchor that holds opposing shuttering panels firmly together, counteracting the massive hydrostatic forces of freshly poured concrete.

  • Ensures Perfect Wall Thickness: It prevents the panels from expanding outward, keeping concrete wall dimensions accurate down to the millimeter.

  • Maximizes Worksite Safety: It drastically minimizes the risk of dangerous formwork blowouts during high-volume mechanical concrete pumping and internal vibration.

Technical Classifications of Tie Rods

Tie rods are categorized based on their production engineering and physical strength profiles:

  • Hot-Rolled Tie Rods: Forged at high temperatures, these bars feature a coarse, broken thread design. They boast extreme load capacity, incredible elasticity, and are self-cleaningmeaning hardened concrete residue flakes off easily.

  • Cold-Rolled Tie Rods: Threaded using precision cold-rolling machinery. These bars have a finer thread pitch and offer a highly cost-effective, budget-friendly alternative for standard residential developments.

  • Standard Industrial Sizes: Universally supplied in 15/17 mm diameters (15mm inner / 17mm outer thread) for everyday building walls, and heavy-duty 20/22 mm formats for massive structural projects.

Core Infrastructure Applications

  • High-Rise Shear Walls & Core Walls: Ensuring alignment in commercial and residential tower shafts.

  • Bridge Piers & Flyover Pillars: Securing massive concrete setups for structural highway projects.

  • Water Retaining Structures & Dams: Used alongside specialized water barrier nuts to prevent moisture seepage.

  • Aluminum Shuttering Systems: Integrating seamlessly into modern modular Mivan formwork systems.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1.PVC Sleeve & Cone Assembly:

Slide a tough PVC tube over the tie rod and attach plastic cones to both ends. The sleeve ensures the liquid concrete paste doesn't stick to the raw steel rod.

2.Formwork Panel Passing:

Insert the assembled tie rod through the pre-drilled holes of your opposing vertical shuttering panels.

3.Securing with Anchor Nuts:

Thread heavy-duty Anchor Nuts (or Wing Nuts) onto the exposed steel ends on the outside of the waler channels and tighten securely to lock the formwork width.

4.Concrete Pour & Rod Extraction:

Pour and cure the concrete. Once hardened, simply unscrew the anchor nuts and smoothly slide the tie rod out of the wall through the internal PVC sleeve for immediate reuse on the next floor.

Indian Testing Standards (IS Codes)

To guarantee complete safety on-site, Surya Engineering products are precision-tested to match top Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) parameters:

  • IS 1786: Dictates the proof stress, elongation properties, and high-tensile material strength.

  • IS 2062: Governs structural steel grades to make sure the core metal handles immense high-tonnage tension without snapping.

Key Advantages of Surya Engineering Tie Rods

  • High Load Capacity: Safely withstands working breaking loads ranging from 95 kN to over 145 kN.

  • Maximum Reusability: Built from high-durability carbon steel, our rods can be reused across hundreds of concrete pouring cycles.

  • Zero On-Site Waste: The continuous thread allows workers to cut the bars down to any custom wall thickness directly on the job site.
