What is a PVC Reinforced Anchor Rungs?

A PVC Reinforced Anchor Rung (also known as a plastic encapsulated footrest or manhole safety step) is a specialized safety step designed to provide safe climbing access in highly corrosive or wet underground environments. Structurally, it consists of a heavy-duty internal core made of steel (typically a 10 mm, 12 mm, or 16 mm high-tensile TMT/Mild Steel bar) that is seamlessly encapsulated by a thick outer layer of high-density Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or Polypropylene (PP) copolymer.

Why It Is Used & Key Advantages

Traditional access steps made of Cast Iron (CI) or Mild Steel (MS) rust rapidly when exposed to sewer gases (H_2S), moisture, and aggressive industrial chemicals. Classification of Anchor Rungs

Anchor rungs are generally classified based on their installation profile and core rod thickness:

1. By Installation Type:

• Cast-in/Grouted Type (U-Shape): Designed with straight protruding legs meant to be permanently embedded directly into concrete walls during casting or grouted post-construction.

• Anchor Bolt / Flange Type: Features a pre-molded mounting base or flat plates with pre-drilled holes, allowing it to be mechanically fixed onto existing concrete walls using heavy-duty anchor fasteners.

• Threaded Type: Features threaded ends that allow the rungs to be firmly screwed or mechanically locked into structural walls.

2. By Rod Diameter:

• Light-Duty (8 mm - 10 mm core): For shallow water chambers or low-traffic shafts.

• Medium-Heavy Duty (12 mm core): Standard grade for public municipal sewers and water sumps.

• Industrial Heavy Duty (16 mm core): Engineered to handle extreme weight loads up to 300 kg in heavy industrial deep wells.

Installation Methodology

To maximize safety compliance, installation must be carried out carefully using one of these two methods:

Method A: Post-Construction Drilled Anchoring/Grouting

1. Marking: Mark the step intervals on the wall surface vertically, ensuring a uniform spacing of 250 mm to 300 mm.

2. Drilling: Using a heavy-duty rotary hammer drill, make two parallel holes corresponding to the center-to-center leg distance of the rung (typically 165 mm to 265 mm).

3. Cleaning: Blow out all concrete dust from the holes using an air pump.

4. Fixing: Fill the holes with high-strength epoxy resin mortar or cement grout, push the extended legs of the rung inside, and allow it to cure fully for 24 hours before step testing.

Method B: Monolithic Pre-Casting

1. Position the anchor rungs directly inside the pre-cast manhole mold or shuttering framework before pouring concrete.

2. Secure the rungs so they stay perpendicular to the wall face. Pour the concrete mix uniformly to ensure the rungs become an inseparable part of the cured concrete structure.

In India, these rungs must conform to strict testing standards to clear public infrastructure approvals:

• IS 10910 / ASTM D-4101 (Polymer Material Compliance): Regulates the raw plastic compound to guarantee specific tensile strength, density, thermal stability, and environmental stress-cracking resistance.
