The MBT Coupler (Mechanical Bolted Type Coupler) is a mechanical reinforcement splicing solution used to join two steel reinforcement bars end-to-end without conventional lap splicing.
Unlike threaded rebar couplers, the MBT system does not require threading, upsetting, forging or rotation of the reinforcement bars. The bars are inserted into the coupler from opposite ends and secured using high-strength shear bolts and serrated gripping components.
During installation, the bolts are tightened progressively until their heads shear at the specified installation torque. The sheared bolt heads provide a convenient visual indication that the required tightening operation has been completed.
BIS's current IS 16172:2023 classification specifically includes Shear Bolting as one of the reinforcement-coupler types. The standard also provides requirements for testing such as static tensile strength, slip, cyclic tensile and fatigue performance.
The working principle of an MBT coupler is based on clamping force rather than thread engagement:
No Bar End Preparation: The rebar ends do not need to be threaded, rammed, crimped, or welded. This saves significant time and avoids the need for specialized threading equipment on site.
Serrated Saddles: Inside the coupler body, there are two serrated saddles that grip the rebar.
Shear-Off Bolts: Special lockshear bolts are tightened using standard tools. When the correct torque is reached, the heads of the bolts shear off. This provides a clear, visual confirmation that the connection is properly tightened and secure.
No Bar Rotation: Because the connection is made by tightening bolts rather than turning the bar, MBT couplers are ideal for splicing bars that cannot be rotated, such as those already fixed in position.
Product Type: Mechanical Bolted Coupler / ET Series Coupler / Shear Bolt Coupler
Material: High Grade Steel - EN8D / 45# Carbon Steel, tensile 700-750 MPa
Bar Size: 12mm to 40mm (custom up to 50mm)
Surface Finish: Zinc Plated / Hot Dipped Galvanized / Electro-galvanized or epoxy-coated
Connection Type: Mechanical grip using shear bolts
Applicable Bar Grade: Fe500, Fe500D, Fe550D, Fe600
Standard: IS 16172:2014 / IS 16172:2023, BS 8110, ACI 318 Type 1 & 2.
MBT is longer than threaded because bolts need pitch.

Thread Type: Not Applicable
The MBT Coupler is a threadless mechanical coupler. Unlike parallel or tapered threaded couplers, the reinforcement bar ends do not need to be threaded before installation.
Connection Method:
Mechanical gripping using serrated saddles and shear bolts.
IS 16172 was revised in 2023. MBT falls under Bolted Mechanical Splice.
MBT Couplers used in bridge construction are generally tested according to IS 16172:2014 Mechanical Splices and same in 2023 edition.
Tests you must pass to claim IS 16172 compliance:
1. Static Tensile Test: Must achieve 125% of the rebar's specified yield strength. Failure must be Bar Break outside coupler zone, not in coupler or bolts. Also noted as Must reach 125% of the rebar's specified yield strength.
2. Slip Test: Relative movement between bar and coupler must not exceed 0.10 mm under service loads. As per IS 16172:2023 clause 9.3: Ls 0.10mm for coupler 100mm, Ls 0.20mm for coupler 300mm.
3. Disengagement Test: No thread slip or pull-out under load.
4. Low Cycle & High Cycle Fatigue: For seismic zones. As per IS 16172, Class H couplers meet both low cycle and high cycle fatigue test requirements, while Class L meets only low cycle.
5. Elongation: Minimum 3% elongation before failure of test piece at splice zone.
For your manufacturing file, you need third-party NABL lab report covering all above + chemical test of EN8D.
IS 16172:2023 Reinforcement Couplers for Mechanical Splices of Steel Bars in Concrete
BIS's product manual confirms IS 16172:2023 as the current standard and includes Shear Bolting among the recognized reinforcement-coupler types.
Where applicable to the project/product cert.
Fast Installation: No threading or bar rotation required, significantly speeding up the splicing process.
Reliable Quality Check: The shear-off bolt heads provide an instant, visual verification that each connection has been tightened correctly.
Versatile: Works well in congested areas, for vertical column splicing, and in closure pours where bars cannot be moved.
Reduces Material Waste: Eliminates the need for lap lengths, saving steel and reducing rebar congestion.
Corrosion Resistance: Available in stainless steel or with galvanized/epoxy coatings for harsh environments.
