MBT Coupler -Bolted Coupler About

MBT Coupler Bolted Coupler

MBT Coupler Bolted Coupler is a mechanical rebar splicing solution designed to connect two reinforcing steel bars end-to-end using a mechanical bolting and gripping mechanism. It is useful in reinforced concrete construction where conventional lap splicing may create congestion or require additional reinforcement length.

The coupler holds the reinforcement bars within its metal body using high-strength bolts, creating a mechanical connection between the bars. It can be used in structural reinforcement applications where a compact and practical rebar connection is required.

How It Works

The mechanism relies on mechanical interlock rather than threaded connections:

  • Internal Structure: The steel sleeve contains two internal serrated saddles that support the bar ends.

  • Lockshear Bolts: High-strength bolts with conical ends are tightened into the sleeve.

  • The Locking Action: As the bolts are torqued, their conical ends embed into the rebar, pressing the bar firmly against the serrated saddles. Simultaneously, the saddles bite into both the bar and the coupler shell, creating a robust mechanical joint

  • Visual Confirmation: Installation is complete when the bolt heads shear off at a predetermined torque. This provides an immediate visual check that the correct clamping force has been applied.

Parts

  1. Sleeve Body: High-strength alloy steel / EN8D / Carbon Steel Gr 8.8/10.9. Manufactured using highstrength alloy steel, the MBT Coupler supports rebar diameters ranging from 12mm to 40mm.
  2. 2x Serrated Saddles: Inside the sleeve, they grip the ribs of TMT bar
  3. Break-off Shear Bolts: Special bolts that snap at exact torque

Sizes Available

Standard ET series is used to connect reinforcing bars of the same size, The ET series is available in sizes from 10-40mm.

Fast moving sizes in India: 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 28mm, 32mm, 36mm, and 40mm.

Typical dimensions:

  • 12-20mm: Length 80-110mm, 2-3 bolts, can be tightened using a ratchet wrench
  • 25mm: Outer Diameter: 43 mm Length: 125 mm - 4 bolts
  • 32mm: Outer Dia 52mm, Length 170mm - 6 bolts
  • 40mm: Outer Dia 62mm, Length 200mm - 8 bolts

For larger sizes, a nut runner is recommended. Impact tools must not be used.

Key Features & Advantages

MBT couplers offer several distinct benefits over other splicing methods:

  • No Bar-End Preparation: Eliminates the need for threading or cutting rebar ends, saving significant time and labor.

  • No Bar Rotation Required: Ideal for connecting bars that are already fixed in place or where space is limited, as the coupler does not need to be rotated during installation.

  • High Strength: The system achieves failure loads exceeding 115% of the characteristic yield strength of grade 500 rebar, ensuring the splice is stronger than the parent bar.

  • Versatility: Suitable for plain round, deformed, and imperial bars. Transition series are available to connect bars of different diameters.

  • Wide Size Range: Available for bar diameters from 10 mm to 40 mm (with larger sizes available on request).

  • Immediate Quality Check: Sheared bolt heads confirm proper installation without the need for additional testing.

Installation - No Machine Needed

This is Mechanical Bolt Type (MBT) Coupling: Uses high-tensile bolts to mechanically grip and connect rebarsno threading, welding, or special bar-end preparation required.

  1. Insert first bar to center mark inside coupler
  2. Insert second bar from other side
  3. Tighten bolts from center to ends one by one with torque wrench / nut runner. Easy to install and no threading needed - Skip the threading machine. Just insert and torque.
  4. Stop when all bolt heads shear off

Fast & Reliable Installation with a torque wrench, offering a time-saving solution.

Advantages vs Threaded Coupler

Choose MBT when:

  • Repair / retrofit / column extension where existing bar cannot be rotated
  • No threading machine on site - saves machine cost for small contractors
  • Plain round bars or old buildings
  • Tight spaces, raft, pile caps, beam-column junction

Advantages:

  • No bar end preparation or rotation
  • No electricity needed for threading
  • Works even if bar is rusty or slightly bent
  • Full visual quality check

Limitation:

  • Cost per piece is higher than threaded coupler (Rs. 95 - Rs. 500 depending on dia)
  • Bigger outer diameter than threaded coupler
  • Not reusable.

When to use MBT specifically?

  • Retrofit and Repair: Existing structure where bars are already concreted and you cannot rotate them
  • Column Extension / Raft to Column: Starter bars bent, need to connect without threading on site
  • Bridges & Confined Spaces: Advantages for Bridge Construction - No threading or welding required, Faster installation
  • Plain round bars or old imperial bars in heritage structures

Standards

Tested as per IS 16172:2014 / 2023, ACI 318 Type 1 & Type 2, BS 8110. Should meet same slip <0.1mm and bar-break criteria as threaded coupler.

If you are stocking it in Mumbai - keep 16mm, 25mm and 32mm as fast-moving sizes. 40mm moves in infrastructure projects only. Want a ready catalog sheet with dimensions and bolt torque chart for your clients?

Today

MBT = Mechanical Bolted Type - Also called Shear Bolt Coupler / Bolt-Lock Coupler.

It is a threadless rebar splicing system. You don't cut threads on the bar at all.

How it Works

MBT couplers provide a cost-effective, easy-to-install method of joining reinforcing bars, particularly when the fixed bar is already in place and space is limited.

MBT couplers require neither bar end preparation to form threads nor bar rotation to effect installation. The bars are supported within the coupler by two serrated saddles. As a series of lock shear bolts are tightened to a predetermined torque, they are embedded into the bar. At the same time, the saddles bite into both the bar and the shell of the coupler.

Installation is complete when the heads of all of the bolts are sheared off. The sheared heads give you instant visual proof of correct installation - During installation, shear bolts are tightened, embedding them securely into the rebar. The bolt heads shear off when the pre-determined tightening torque is reached, providing an instant visual check.

It works on all bar types - MBT couplers can also be used to join imperial, plain round or deformed reinforcing bars and achieves failure loads higher than 115% of the characteristic yield strength of grade 500 reinforcing bar.
