An MBT Bolted Rebar Coupler is a high-strength, heavy-duty mechanical sleeve connector used to join two steel reinforcing bars (TMT bars) end-to-end without requiring any prior preparation of the bar ends.
Unlike traditional parallel-threaded or taper-threaded couplers, no threading, no peeling, and no cold-forging of the rebar is needed.
Traditionally, engineers relied on Lap Splicing (overlapping two TMT bars and tying them with binding wire). However, lapping introduces serious structural and logistical issues that MBT Couplers solve seamlessly:
Eliminates Concrete Congestion: Overlapping steel bars doubles the steel density at joints. This leaves zero space for concrete aggregates to flow, resulting in structural voids and honeycombing. MBT couplers maintain a streamlined, single-bar profile.
Independent Load Transfer: Lap joints depend completely on the surrounding concrete to transfer loads. If the concrete degrades or suffers seismic impact, the joint fails. An MBT coupler joint transfers axial tensile and compressive forces directly from bar to bar, making it completely independent of concrete health.
Saves Massive Steel & Costs: Lap lengths require an extra wastage of $40\times D$ to $50\times D$ (where $D$ is the bar diameter) of premium steel. MBT couplers reduce steel wastage to absolute zero, lowering overall project costs.
Perfect for Emergency Repairs & Retrofitting: Since it requires no machinery at the spot to thread the rebar, it is the only viable choice for joining existing protruding bars in old structures or deep foundations.
At Surya Engineering, we manufacture MBT couplers categorized precisely by their structural applications:
| Coupler Type | Description | Best Used For |
| Standard MBT Coupler | Joins two TMT bars of the exact same diameter end-to-end. | Columns, beams, core walls, piling extensions. |
| MBT Transition Coupler | Designed with a stepped internal bore to securely join two rebars of different diameters. | Structural steps where columns reduce size on higher floors (e.g., 32mm to 25mm). |
| MBT Headed Anchors (Terminator) | Features an end-cap bolted mechanism providing an alternative to hooked rebars. | Resolving congestion at beam-column joints, anchoring bar ends. |
Surya Engineering manufactures MBT Couplers utilizing premium-grade EN8D Carbon Steel or high-tensile alloy steel to guarantee flawless structural load paths.
Available Sizes: 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 36 mm, and 40 mm.
Material Grade: EN8D Carbon Steel (High yield and exceptional tensile properties).
Performance: Consistently achieves failure loads higher than 115% of the characteristic yield strength of Grade Fe 500 / Fe 550D TMT bars.
One of the biggest advantages of Surya Engineerings MBT coupler is its incredibly simple installation process that requires zero specialized lab technicians or heavy threading machinery on site.
[Image showing a step-by-step sequence of inserting rebar into an MBT coupler and tightening the shear bolts until the heads snap off]
Inspect and Clean: Ensure the ends of the two rebars are relatively straight and free from heavy rust, concrete slurry, or dirt.
Mark the Insertion Depth: Mark half the length of the MBT coupler sleeve onto the ends of both TMT bars using chalk or a marker to ensure the bars meet exactly at the center pin/stop of the coupler.
Position the Coupler: Slide the MBT coupler sleeve over the first bar up to the marked depth. Gently finger-tighten the lockshear bolts on that side to hold it in place.
Insert the Connecting Bar: Slide the second rebar into the remaining half of the coupler until it hits the center stop.
Tighten to Shear: Using a standard manual ratchet wrench (for sizes 10mm20mm) or an electric/pneumatic nut runner (for sizes 25mm40mm), begin tightening the bolts. Always start from the center bolts and work outwards towards the ends.
Visual Confirmation: Tighten until the heads of all the lockshear bolts cleanly snap (shear) off. The sheared head leaves the bolt flush or slightly proud, providing an instant visual quality check that correct torque and ultimate grip have been achieved.
Quality control is our highest priority. Every batch of MBT Bolted Rebar Couplers manufactured by Surya Engineering in Mumbai is rigorously tested in NABL-accredited facilities to strictly comply with IS 16172:2023 (the latest Bureau of Indian Standards code for Reinforcement Couplers for Mechanical Splices of Steel Bars in Concrete).
Our products successfully pass the full spectrum of mandatory IS 16172 tests:
Static Tensile Test (Clause 9.2.1): Verifies that the coupler joint can withstand extreme structural pulling forces. It must achieve "Bar Break"meaning the TMT steel bar breaks outside the coupler assembly, proving the coupler joint is stronger than the steel itself.
Slip Test (Clause 9.3): Measures the micro-movement inside the sleeve under structural tension. The total permanent slip must not exceed 0.10 mm.
Cyclic Tensile Test (Clause 9.4): Evaluates seismic resistance by subjecting the joint to 100 alternating high-stress cycles (ranging from 5% to 90% of the bar's characteristic yield strength (f_y)) without losing structural integrity.
Low & High Cycle Fatigue Tests: Simulates dynamic, long-term vibrational loads (like wind forces or moving heavy metro traffic) to eliminate any risk of structural fatigue over decades.
No Bar Threading Equipment Needed: Saves massive capital expenditure on renting or buying threading/forging machinery, saving power consumption on-site.
Universal Compatibility: Works flawlessly on standard Indian deformed TMT bars, plain round bars, and even imperial or corroded bars during structural restoration.
High Seismic Safety: Because our couplers exceed 115% yield strength requirements, they are ideal for high-seismic zones (Zone IV & V) across India.
Zero Skilled Labor Required: Any local site worker can execute the installation perfectly using standard tools. The sheared bolt heads provide instant inspection transparency for site engineers.
Bridge & Flyover Widening: Splicing old existing reinforcement bars to new extensions where threading is impossible.
Metro Rail Projects: Piling works, diaphragm walls, and column joints with restricted head space.
High-Rise Towers: Core walls and heavily reinforced column splices to eliminate concrete congestion.
Precast Concrete Elements: Joining precast beams and columns on-site quickly.
